Proposed Project

What: Limestone Creek Streambank Restoration; Repairs to Damage

Where: Northeast of DeRuyter Reservoir in the Town of Cazenovia, Madison County, NY.

Why: The East Branch of Limestone Creek represents a high quality headwater trout stream serving as a nursery area for young of the year trout.

The landslide and resulting streambank erosion and sedimentation was having quantifiable negative effects on the stream’s water quality and fish and macroinvertebrate populations both onsite and in downstream reaches.

The restorative work has largely mitigated this impact, but must be maintained and enhanced to ensure long term success.

Whom: Madison County Planning Department, Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District, Stearns and Wheler, Marcy Excavation, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, National Grid.

When: Initial investigative work began in the summer of 2003 and major restoration work was completed in 2005. Work continues in response to major storm related damages that occurred in June of 2006.

Potential Partners & Contributors: The adjacent landowner is National Grid, an international power company and a major power provider to the Central New York area.

NY-CWRP has members who can develop assist with legal documents, planting programs, supply plants, and perform vegetation type conversion.

Local Trout Unlimited members and sportsman’s organizations can provide ‘grunt’ labor for habitat manipulations and restorative plantings.
