Proposed Project

What: Ephratah Community Wetland Educational Facility

Where: Adjacent to NYS Route 67 in the Town of Ephratah, Fulton County, NY.

The site is a freshwater wetland owned by the Ephratah Rod and Gun. It is characterized by a variety of herbaceous vegetation, shrubs, and trees, with little or no open water. A tributary to Caroga Creek is 300 feet south of the site and provides drainage from the area.

Why: To improve community appreciation of wetlands and to increase habitat diversity in freshwater wetland which feeds Caroga Creek. Site improvements will benefit a variety of wetland wildlife species, primarily by increasing water depths from one to ten feet over a one-quarter acre area.

Whom: The Club and the Fulton County Soil and Water Conservation District are working with community leaders to create a wetland. Youth educational programs and a barrier-free fishing and observation platform will provide surrounding communities with recreational and learning opportunities which have not been available. (Gloversville, Johnstown, Ft. Plain, and Canajoharie are each within 15 miles).

When: The project was initiated in 2005, but has stalled pending commitment of partners, permitting, wetland design expertise, excavation services, and hardware donation.

Potential Partners & Contributors: NY-CWRP, Fulton County Soil and Water Conservation District, Ephratah Rod & Gun Club, Ephratah Highway Department, Oppenheim-Ephratah High School, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Greater Adirondack RC&D Council, and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Needed most are permitting assistance, excavation and earthmoving in-kind services for about 10 days, and restoration materials.

Costs:
Estimated total cost = $20,000

Estimated matching funds available = $ 8,000

Funds requested of NY-CWRP et alia = $12,000
